Quite possibly one of the most picturesque mooring grounds in Auckland, this mooring is a short row (roughly 300m) from the Birkenhead ferry building and popular Hinemoa Park, and offers stunning backdrops of the city, Sky Tower, and harbour bridge, especially during the evening. Although very secure, it does experience a notable fetch across the harbour in a southwest breeze, which is Auckland’s prevailing wind. As with any exposed anchorage, conditions can become slightly choppy when wind opposes tide. The passing ferry may gently rock the boat, but this is brief and typically not a concern unless engaged in delicate operations. Regular ferry service connects you to the upper harbour and the CBD, and a café in the ferry building is perfect for morning coffees. Hinemoa Park, adjacent to the mooring, includes a small beach, playground, public BBQ facilities, well-maintained toilets and changing rooms that are always open, ample parking, and both boat and dinghy ramps. Dinghy lockers are available for negotiation. Parking along the seawall is secured by bollards at night, and ample street parking is also available. Just five minutes up the road, the town of Highbury offers supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and cafes, along with other necessities like The Engine Room marine mechanics. Positioned on the outer edge of the mooring ground, pickups and departures are easily managed. The mooring is 9m deep at datum and rated for vessels up to 12m in length. Secure yet exposed to the south and southwest, it remains well sheltered from west-northwest through northeast.
